I've always thought that Bosch specialized in automotive parts for European vehicles. Are Bosch Premium Starters and Alternators a good choice for domestic vehicles?
Bosch has been supplying automotive parts for domestic applications that meet or exceed OE specifications for many decades. For example, Bosch is the original equipment supplier for late model Dodge, Jeep, GM, Saturn, and Chrysler vehicles. Worldwide, at plants in 10 countries, over 20 million starters and alternators are built annually for OE manufacturers.
Do Bosch Remanufactured and 100% New Alternators and Starters deliver equally reliable performance?
Yes! The complete line of 100% New Premium Starters and Alternators are available for the most popular late model domestic and import vehicles and are built with the highest quality premium components. They’re specifically engineered to withstand excessive heat and high electrical demand. And all units are full-load tested to meet or exceed the original equipment manufacturer’s amperage and voltage output standards for proven starting and charging performance. All Bosch Remanufactured Alternators and Starters are designed to meet or exceed Original Manufacturers specifications and every unit is run through a rigorous multi-point physical and functional test procedure before it can be certified as a premium quality Bosch Remanufactured product.
How can I be assured that this unit will fit when installed?
Every Bosch Premium Starter and Alternator is application specific. In other words, it is a “one-for-one” match with the original equipment (OE) unit it is replacing.

Can I use my alternator to recharge a discharged battery?
No! When installing an alternator, the battery should be fully recharged before vehicle use. In many cases, depending upon how thoroughly discharged the battery is, it can take 4-8 hours. Most technicians and DIYers don’t want to wait that long so they just get the vehicle running, and figure that by driving the car around the alternator will charge the battery. In some cases with weather extremes the battery never gets fully charged, and in all cases the alternator is being overly stressed asking it to do a job it was not designed to do. This leads to premature failure.
I know several NASCAR teams, such as Hendrick Motorsports, Richard Childress Racing, Petty Enterprises, Chip Ganassi Racing, and Evernham Motorsports, race using special race alternators manufactured by Bosch. Does any of this technology improve alternators for streetcars?
Yes! Racing provides a great developmental impetus and test bed for alternator durability and performance, and what is learned at Daytona, Darlington, or Bristol helps to improve alternators installed in today’s cars and light trucks. Racing has led to improved cooling features, body designs, front and rear ball bearings, and has advanced the electronics in the alternator.
Before I install a new or remanufactured alternator, what should I check?
First, make sure the battery is fully charged. Depending on the state of the battery, this could take between 4-8 hours. You can not use the alternator to charge a battery as this will overly stress the alternator and could cause a premature failure. Second, check all battery cables and connections. It is good to clean any visible corrosion, but it is also necessary to perform a voltage drop test between the battery cable terminal at the battery and the opposite end of the same cable, whether it is at the starter, alternator, or a ground connection. If the cables are badly corroded, current can not adequately reach the battery to maintain the charge. This could again cause a premature failure of the alternator. See the Technical Info tab for a charging systems troubleshooting guide.
Warning: Never disconnect a battery cable while the engine is running to "test" the alternator. Doing so can cause high voltage spikes that can damage the alternator as well as other electronics.
What features extend the life expectancy of an alternator?
Features such as larger bearings, improved circuitry, increased output, and additional provisions for cooling extend an alternator's life expectancy. These features reduce stress on the alternator and therefore increase its life. When shopping for a new or remanufactured alternator, always compare these features to make sure you are getting the highest quality, longest lasting alternator you can buy.
How can I tell if I need a new starter?
If the battery is okay but the engine still cranks slowly or not at all, it is time to check the starting system. The starter could have failed, or excessive resistance in the wires and their connections can prevent the proper voltage from reaching the starter causing slow or no cranking. Check for loose or dirty cable connections or for battery cables with wires that are too small in diameter (gauge). If the starter solenoid clicks but the starter does not operate, it is recommended to use a voltmeter to determine if the proper voltage is reaching the solenoid through the starter control circuit. If the solenoid is receiving the proper voltage and the starter does not crank, then the solenoid ground may be bad, the solenoid contacts may be damaged, or the starter is dead. If all connections are clean and tight and the voltage drop exceeds 0.2 volts, the solenoid should be replaced. If everything else checks out as okay, measure the starter draw and amperage, if incorrect, replace the starter. If the solenoid is defective but attached to the starter motor, it may be best for you to replace the complete starter and solenoid assembly- there's a very good chance the starter will die very soon along with the solenoid. Why risk a comeback and more delay getting the vehicle up and running. See the Technical Info tab for a starting systems troubleshooting guide.
I have installed a mega-watt sound system or have other electricity demanding components in my car. Does Bosch have an alternator that can power all these systems?
For applications that demand high power, such as cars outfitted with mega-watt sound systems, Bosch offers High-Output Alternators that are 100% new and are engineered to produce maximum amperage at lower rpms. This allows the charging system to keep up with the amplifiers and eliminates battery rundown. These units can create up to 200 amps, which is nearly double the output of some stock units they replace. These alternators have been designed from the beginning to generate high output and have features such as additional copper wire windings in the stator, ceramic coated housings to handle high heat, Nomex® insulation (the same kind used in flame resistant clothing), soldered connections coated with silicone to reduce corrosion and protect against heat and vibration, and smaller diameter T6160 aircraft grade aluminum pulleys which reduce weight and allow the unit to spin faster at low rpm. Best of all, these units fit the same as the original and are designed as bolt-in direct replacements.
